World Lion Day – Maths, Art and Recycling Came Together
To celebrate World Lion Day, the Grade 5 learners combined Maths and Art and to create a magnificent lion using recycled and everyday materials.
The project began with learners colouring and drawing geometric shapes, making the connection between mathematical concepts and art. They then used these shapes to create their own designs on used teabags.
The decorated teabags were carefully pasted onto a lion outline drawn on cardboard from a discarded box. Even the smallest details were created from recycled materials: tea leaves formed the tip of the tail and the nose, bottle tops became the eyes, and pencil sharpenings and strips of used teabags were transformed into the lion’s magnificent mane.
The finished artwork is an example of how creativity, Maths, recycling and teamwork can come together to create something truly special.
The project encouraged the learners to look at everyday discarded materials in a different way — not as rubbish, but as materials with possibilities.
