Celebrating Mandela Month – Creating Madiba
To celebrate Mandela Month, learners spent three weeks learning about Nelson Mandela through art, discussion and teamwork.
The objective was to explain to the learners who Mandela was, why we remember him and what qualities made him such an important leader and gentleman.
The learners cut their brightly coloured artworks of Mandela into sections – his shoes, trousers, jacket, hands and shirt – which were carefully collaged together to create the large Mandela now displayed in the HELP room.
As the learners coloured the letters, volunteers worked alongside them, discussing the meaning of words such as respectful, forgiving, brave, strong, patient, peaceful, fair and helpful, and helping them understand how these qualities were reflected in Mandela’s life.
